The three gears depicted on my home page and book cover cannot actually move. However, through some relatively intricate mathematical calculations along with empirical design of the teeth a workable 3-D triple gear set has been produced. The gears were designed by Paul & Henry Segerman and manufactured by 3-D printer by Shapeways.

I just wanted to add that I purchased the 3d printed version of these gears from Shapeways and my 13 year old son helped me to videotape the movement of the gears. To me this is an example of “thinking outside the box” in a very literal sense. Three gears on a plane cannot physically turn yet by moving them out of the plane you can find a configuration that does.
